This years competition took place under cloudy skies on 25th September at Robin Hood, with 23 players competing for the cut glass trophy.
After considerable difficulties regarding our allotted tee times, forcing several players to start at the 9th hole, everyone managed to get their rounds underway.
Pinkman started off brilliantly with 2 birdies in the first 3 holes but he was unable to sustain this level of play to be one of several players closely bunched at the turn. At this stage Alan Hanlin was leading by a nose 22 points, Geoff Irwin 20, John Raison & Phil Budd 19, Tony Painting & Pinkman 18points.
Disappointing blobs on 16 & 18 condemned Geoff Irwin to 4th place with 36 points, but a good second 9 from Dave Grenfell of 20 points to add to his 17 lifted him to 3rd place on 37 points. Another steady round from John Raison (he only had 2 bad holes, but still scored points) added 18 points to take 2nd place on 37 points (better back 9). But outstanding play from Alan Hanlin raised his total to 41 points and 1st place.
The Longest Drive went to Alan Hanlin who was mighty with his 5 wood.
Nearest the pin was won by Dave Grenfell with a lucky kick off the back of the left-hand bunker curving round towards the pin to 30 inches.(beating the next nearest by a mere 169 inches)
The winner’s enclosure is :-
WINNER Alan Hanlin 41 points
2nd Place John Raison 37 points
(better back 9)
3rd Place Dave Grenfell 37 points
Congratulations to Alan Hanlin this year’s
Winner of The Ron Preen Memorial Trophy.
After some discussion on the question of the competition’s future, it was considered a good idea to press ahead with commissioning a new Trophy to be called The West Warwickshire Memorial Trophy
to be competed for in 2010. This will be in memory of Ron Preen, Ray Holland and John Avery and others.
