THE “YOU BOYS”
Simon Fokes shows his class to win in 2016
Oh Dear! The rains came! After a week of glorious weather, it rained on The You Boys Golf Day this year.
A few changes at the last minute reduced the field to 20 players who donned their wet weather gear to attack the course. There were some very inventive uses of local supermarket bags doubling as bag head covers. (Advertising is everywhere)
The free bucket of balls on the range, plus putting practice was obviously insufficient preparation for Mick Miller, as his first 2 Tee shots were into the Driving range and onto the putting green. He settled down later.
In the morning round, handicaps were matched on 36 points by Arthur Blake, Mick Miller, Pinkman & Simon Fokes. Out in front on 41points was Leighton, closely followed by Tom Doonan 38, and John Lawson 37. All to play for in the afternoon?
The Donkey Stakes looked a hot prospect with anyone of 8 contenders in the running, although Ryan on 19 points was a firm favourite with the bookies?
With the rain holding off and their roast pork dinner eaten, prospects for the afternoon looked to be improving.
The Donkey Stakes was a huge battle, with all 4 Players within a point of each other. It promised to be resolved on a countback between Dave Harper & Foxy, both on 50 points, but they were saved by a miserable round of 20 points in the afternoon by Pete Green, who secured The Donkey with a total of 49 points.
At the other end of the contest, scoring started to get very competitive. Arthur & Mick ruled themselves out of the Challenge with poor scores, but Nigel forced his way into the top group with his front 9 of 20 points to join Simon 21, Tom 22 and Pink 20.
L.R. and John Lawson looked though they had bottled it with 13 & 16 on the front 9 respectively, but they both came back strongly to finish in a 3 way tie on 73 points with Pink.
Nigel could not sustain his challenge with 2 blobs and Dave Evans, in spite of his blistering 22 points on the run in, ending just outside the top group.
The 3rd place had to be decided on countback, with Pinkman securing the place with his 37 points in the afternoon.
One point in front on 74 was Tom Doonan in 2nd place, but an outstanding round amassing 42 points off his 10 handicap (Including an Eagle 2 on the 6th), Simon Fokes was the Winner of The You Boys Challenge 2016 with 78 points
Foxy won the Longest drive on 18th in the morning and in the afternoon Nigel Jarman prevailed on the 8th.
Nearest the Pin on 7th saw Alan “You Boys” Redwood nearest and Pinkman on 11th in the afternoon.
A total of 14 Birdies won a ball each with more than half the field cashing in.
(Simon might have won the event today, but he lost his shoes)
The Winners Enclosure:-
Winner Simon Fokes 78 points
