The 1893 Challenge Cup

The 2016 1893 Challenge Trophy

Was won in spectacular style

After the first leg at Olton GC, the Olton boys were 3-1 up.

However the Robin lads were confidant on their home turf. The first 3 groups took to the course with Robin winning two matches and halving the other. So 3 a-piece, down to the final group of Nigel Jarman & Jamie Roberts (Robin) v Pete Millane & Dave Widal (Olton).

Is was nip n tuck through out the match, Jamie won the 16th to put Robin 1 up but they were back to level after Pete won the 17th

So all square in the match and the series as the final group stood on the 18th. Robin were looking favourites with both Jamie & Nigel with a shot over Dave, plus a drawn match would mean Robin retains the Trophy and bragging rights.

Good drives by all four were follow up by Pete going AWOL. So Robin looking in the driving seat, Reasonable 2nd shots by the remaining 3 were followed up with Nigel & Jamie putting their 3rd shots just off the green. All looking good for Robin, 5 net 4 looking probable for both Jamie & Nigel, which should be enough to at least draw the hole.

But then Dave (Shaky) Widall shook it all up! . He approached his third shot with his trusty wedge, 65 yards from the hole. He hit it sweet, very sweet. It soared up in to the sky. The shot was being watch by a package gallery from Robin’s club house balcony. The ball finally land on the green. Two bounces and it then started to roll towards the hole. It kept rolling and rolling and to the joy of the Olton mob it dropped in the hole. A birdie 3!! Wow!

All was not lost, both Nigel & Jamie still both had difficult chips and if they holed one of them then the match would be halfed with a 4 net 3. It wasn’t to be with them both failing to convert their chips shots.

So Olton won the 2017 series 4 1/2 to 3 1/2

Well played Olton boys, look forward to the 2017 series.
