Alan Rogers wins The Memorial Trophy 2016 on Home Turf
Excellent weather for October produced a good turnout for this year’s West Warwicks Memorial Trophy at Olton Golf Club. With lots of changes in the numbers, right up until the day, saw 25 players tackle the course, which was in great condition.
The front 9, with numerous short pins on tricky slopes, took its toll on the scores with only a small number of the players posting good scores at halfway. 19 points from Mick Miller, Pete Olds, Arthur Blake & Steve Fox; 18 Alan Rogers; 17 John Raison & Mark Olds; 16 Mark Averill & Kevin Hobbs. Much better scoring all round on the back 9 produced some movement at the top.
Leader in the clubhouse in the first group, Mick Miller had stood on the 18th tee with 38 points, with the Trophy in his grasp. He managed to blob this shortened hole to bomb out ( O. B. with his 2nd shot) Taking over from Mick, John Raison, coming in with 40 points, remained the leader until the last 2 groups overtook him. An outstanding back 9 of 25 points lifted Jamie Roberts into second place, but not quite enough to beat Alan Rogers, who added 23 to his front 9 of 18 points to win this year’s Trophy by 1 point.
Longest Drive on the 10th Mark Averill set the mark until big hitting Ryan Pallett piled one past to win the prize. Only one name on the Nearest-the-Pin on 13, again, saw that man Mark Averill winning. Dave Harper tried out his new contact lenses! Not sure that was a good idea Dave, judging by the result?
We shall be adding Syd Madeley’s name to the Trophy whist the base is at the engravers.
