The Burnham & Shire Cups 2017
at Carden Park
Goodness me, what terrible weather this week! Autumn Gales here already? Fortunately for our 28 golfers taking the 2 days away at Carden Park, the weather was more friendly. The Hotel was exceptional. Good professional hospitality all round. The 2 courses, The Cheshire and The Nicklaus, were completely different with the players split in their preferences for each of them.
The Burnham Cup played on the Cheshire course on Sunday afternoon was a challenging first day. The course was tight, with the 2nd cut too long and the rough brutal. (Lots of lost balls and time looking)
The opening par 3 caught a lot of players out, many not reaching the green. Not so for Tommo, who won Nearest-the-Pin with his shot. Pete Olds was caught out, nearly missing his playing group, and having to change into his golf shoes at the first tee.
A par score on the front nine was very good with Nigel Bain and Pinkman on 18 points, but just out in front on 19 was Stuart Durk. It all rested on the back nine. Leighton Rickards set the pace with 18 points, which could have been better without a blob on 18. Nigel fell away despite a Birdie on 15. Peter Rock forced his way up the order with his 19 points. Stuart Durk would have been disappointed with a blob on 11 which dropped him to 3rd place on countback. Gordon Allen’s 19 points lifted him into 2nd place, but Johnny “Cash” Raison took the money (and the Trophy) by 1 point, finishing with 35 points. A popular Winner?
