Olton in last ball thriller

Run out

Run out

Olton's under 17s played in their re arranged u17 Bill Lloyd Trophy final at Kings Heath on a glorious September day.

Put into bat by Walmley, Olton got off to a steady start as Jon Webb and Gary Hawkins put on fifty for the opening partnership. Jonny played several wonderful shots particularly off Tim Gruiters whilst Gary set out his stall as the anchor man. Jonny went for 25 and then Gary was joined by skipper Phil Ceillam. Phil soon settled in and began to pepper the short boundary with three huge sixes and a fourth over long on to the tennis courts. Phil made 52 and Gary 40 as Olton closed on 134-3, a score which was going to be challenging on a ground with big boundaries on three sides.

Walmley got off to a flying start as Olton's bowlers struggled to find length and direction as Gruiters and Slattery made 50 in seven overs. The introduction of Joe Moore to the attack reaped immediate dividends as he had Gruiters well caught for 25 but Slattery continued to play the anchor role for Walmley and went on to make 38.

Olton continued to take wickets and Walmley were down to their last pair. Needing 30 off 3 overs. But Ahmed struck the ball cleanly and when the final over began Walmley needed 8 to win. A few singles and a four meant on the last ball a single was needed. In great tension Ahmed pushed it towards mid on and managed to get in before the throw came and Walmley had won by 1 wicket.

Under 15 v Dorridge »

With this win, this young and inexperienced under 15 side kept Olton in the WCB U15 Premier League for the 2009 season.

This season was a difficult one for the young players as essentially the side had to be rebuilt after last season's successful team had moved on to the next age group. Maintaining the club's position in the Premier League was never going to be easy but with this third win the side secured their place for next year. Well done lads and well done to Marc Webb and Steve Wallis who took as coaches and managers early on in the season.

Under 11 win Solihull League

The u11 eight a side pairs team won the WCB u11 Solihull Division of the Edgbaston League with this win over local rivals Solihull Blossomfield.

Batting first Olton scored 303-3 as Blossomfield bowled tightly but quick single taking allowed Olton to make a respectable score.

Blossomfield had the worst of starts when a player was injured second ball and was unable to take any further part in the game. When they reached their third pair to bat Blossomfield were well placed with 255 on the board but Olton's good bowling brought them crucial wickets and Blossomfield were unable to get any closer than 245-6.

Olton go on to play Leamington in teh quarter finals in a home draw on Thursday July 10th

Chance to Shine

Olton and WW Cricket Club have been involved in the community Chance to Shine cricket programme.

Throughout the winter coaches, particularly Errol Simms, has been working in primary schools teaching year 4 pupils the basics of cricket.

This culminates in a grand cricket festival at Olton. For two days children from 15 local schools have come to Olton to play soft ball cricket on the club's ground.

On Wednesday there were well over 200 children with 180 coming on Thursday. The sessions were led by Kelly Evenson from the Warwickshire Cricket Board with support from Recca a member of Warwickshire u19 side and the club's own coach Steve Wallis.

The children played all sorts of skill based activities and then played Lord's Cricket style matches against other schools.

The club was looking great after all the hardwork undertaken the previous Saturday for Ground Force Day.

Thanks too, to Denise Ceillam, for amking the teas and coffees which were greatly appreciated.
