| | | In the final match of the season, Olton needed to win convincingly with a full 24 point win and hope that Brockhampton would fail to score the eight points they needed to ensure that they rather than Olton secured the second promotion place.
In the final run in Olton won each of their last six matches played. At Grange Road today Olton won the toss and batted first.
The match had been reduced to 49 overs a side and got under way only 45 minutes late after stalwart work by team members and groundsman Graeme who were up at the ground at 7 am mopping up after overnight rain.
James neale and Michael ceillam got Olton off to superb start putting on 88 for the opening wicket. Michael returning to the first team for his first match since injurying himself at Oswestry eleven matches ago looked in good form as he raced to 51 with 4 fours and 3 sixes off 77 balls before being trapped LBW by Williams. Marc Webb hit a rapid 14 with a four and a six as Olton tried to score as quickly as possible. James Neale fell to an extremely good catch by Bierley at Long on off Fynn for 31 before Dan Johnson (24*) and Gary Hawkins put on an unbeaten 54 for the fifth wicket. Gary looking ever more confident cheekily switch hit not once but three times in his innings of 39* when Neale declared 3 overs early on 185-4.
Olton opened with legspinner Khan, with the obvious tactic that the side's leading wicket taker was going to bowl all the way through and he struck early dismissing Fynn at 10, Williams at 12 and Bierley at 26. Alex Huxley provided resistance but Sunil was brought on at the scorebox end and grabbed two wickets that of Huxley and Whitthread to make the score 60-6. Sam Huxley and Davidson resisted for a while with a 40 partnership amking 19 each, but when Davidson played on to Khan the end was in sight as skipper Neale took the last two wickets for one run and Oswestry were all out for 102.
24 points for Olton. Now it was a question of how well Brockhampton did at Bablake in a game reduced to 25 overs a side. With commentary via mobile phone Brockhamptoon needed 6 off their last over chasing 174 in 25 overs. With two balls to go they needed four but a fifth ball six sent Brockhampton up and meant Olton were third.

Still in third place after win over lowly Studley.
| | |
Sometimes, watching Olton chase a total is painful. Today was no exception keeping spectators and the scorer on tenterhooks and wondering whether we were going to do it. One will not have any fingernails left by the end of the season!
Again Olton did everything right in the 1st half of the game. Studley batted first and Jamie Hawkins grabbed the wicket of Newdick for 5 in the 6th over , Liam Gately taking a regulation catch behind the stumps. Jamie struck again in the 12th over to remove Miller for 4 and when Roy Adams had Nazir caught by Sunil, Studley were 31-3 in 13 overs. Stamenkovic came in and dropped anchor, at one point batting for 39 balls without scoring, but his battling 45 when he was 8th out in 117 balls epitomised the determination of Studley in their fight to avoid relegation. Roy Adams returned to the attack to remove Stamenkovic and Moss while Khan toiled away for less than two runs an over for his 3-40, giving him 19 wickets in August. Studley battled away to 149-9.
This really should have been a cakewalk for Olton, but they reckoned without Studley's fighting spirt. Jon Webb went cheaply in the 3rd over, and skipper James Neale and Gary Hawkins got Olton going and when James was out in 16th over for 22 with the score on 53, Olton seemed to be progressing satisfactorily. But those nerves kicked in again. Gary was out for 25 to Lewis whose slow left arm bowling was as tight as Babar's had been, Dan Fox soon followed and Olton had slipped to 70-4.
Gareth Simpson, on his return to the 1st XI following his big knock in the 2nds the previous Saturday settled in and was going well when a direct throw ran him out for a confident 31 at 110-5 in the 35 over.
39 needed in 20 overs. Who would have thought that Olton would need 19 of them? Roy departed for 12 but Richard Stevens (17*) in his first innings for the 1st XI remain calm and took what runs came his way and edged Olton to level the scores and then Babar hit a massive six to win the game with just the over to spare.

| | | Fordhouses batted first and after Jmaie Hawkins had taken an early wicket, Richards and Raees put on exactly 100 for the second wicket when James Neale had Raees stumped by Liam Gately for 53. This was the first of Liam's four victims.
Shortly after Neale had Richards out for 41 and Fordhouses were 117-3. Their slump then continued as Babar Khan, now bowling at his favourite end began to weave his magic spell to take five wickets and with skipper Neale claiming two more Fordhouses were all out of the last ball of the innings for 167.
Olton were in no mood to hang around, or rather Jonny Webb wasn't. He played some really great shots as he powered his way to 50 off 45 balls and was out with the score at 87 for 75 off 67 balls with 13 fours and a six.
Thereafter James Neale cruelly run out at the nonstrikers end for 25, Gary Hawkins 21* and Dan Fox 18* steered Olton to a big win.
This win takes Olton back to 3rd place in the league just 16 points behind the second promotion place with just three games to go. |

Olton did everything right for 95% of this top of the table match against league leaders Wombourne.
Wombourne batted first and made a good start with Hughes and Quiney making the days largest stand of 57, but after that as Khan bowled accurately, and backed up by excellent ground fielding Olton whittled away at their innings. Highlights included an excellent catch to dismiss Hughes for 43 by Dan Johnson, a good run out by Gary Hawkins, a super catch low down by Jon Webb, smart catching by Liam Gately behind the stumps, superb bowling by Khan for his 4 -39 off 20 overs and Jamie Hawkins showed how to wrap up the tail for 4-25 for Impacts Olton Man of the Match award.
All out for 128, Wombourne were determined to make it hard for Olton, but good knocks from Gary Hawkins, Jon Webb and then by Roy Adams (43) set Olton on the cautious way to victory.
With the score at 114-5 with just 15 needed to win of five overs and with five wickets left, Olton seemed on course to win. Then in the space of six overs and in particular 12 balls from slow left arm spinner Thakur in which he took 4 wickets for 2 runs Olton had thrown it all away and were all out for 121 losing by seven runs! |

1st XI - v - Bablake
| | |
Game over by 3.25
Olton travelled to Bablake Old Boys in Coundon Coventry forthe first time in their history and found the ground very much to thier liking. Midweek rain had made the pitch very damp and when James Neale won the toss he had no hesitation in asking Bablake to bat first.
Then followed a very sorry sight for Bablake and their supporters as one batsman after another was out ot two devasting spells of bowling as first Roy Adams ripped out their top order taking 4 wickets for five runs in seven overs to reduce Babalake to 13-4.
Then Suniul Vyakaranam came on to wrap up the tail and take four wickets for 6 runs in 5.5 overs. With James Neale's fine run out of Young with a direct throw from mid off and Babar getting awicket too Bablake were out for a mere 28 in 24.5 overs.
Liam Gately making his first team league debut grabbed a catch and a stumping the latter being the tenth wicket of the match off Sunil from a leg side wide!
Jonny Webb was out in the first over making nine wickets at that one end out of 11 but Ed Harris and Michael saw Olton virtually home before Ed tried to finish it with a big six but was also stumped. Michael was not out 12, as Olton romped home by eight wickets in a mere 10 overs. |

1st XI - v - Lichfield
| | |
Match abandoned in the end
Lichfield batted first. The game was reduced to 54 overs per side due to late start. In occasional light rain Lichfield made 187-6 with Olton bowling their overs exceptionally quickly, but still had to come off for 28 minutes.
This meant Olton could face only 46 overs in their innings.
Their winning draw target was recalculated to 160
Olton batted one over and rain set in.
On resumption Olton were left with the absolute minimum overs they could have to make a valid game - another 24 overs.
They were now chasing a winning draw target of 87.
In the gathering gloom the game was finally abandoned with another 7.2 overs to go. |
